Sun, Moon and Star – An event by Mariana Castillo Deball

Artist Talk

As part of the exhibition The Back Of The Treasure – On the Epistemology of the Cabinet of Curiosities, the artist Mariana Castillo Deball personally introduces key aspects of her works, which are permeated by figures and stories from Aztec mythology. Among other works, the focus is on the paper cut The Stronger the Light Your Shadow Cuts Deeper (2010), which traces the outline of the moon goddess Coyolxauhqui after the monolith in the Templo Mayor Museum in Mexico City. As the title suggests, the work refers to a central area of tension: the brighter the light of knowledge falls on the monolith, the darker and more unclear its meaning ultimately becomes.

Exclusively for this evening, the artist will also be showing the video There Is a Space Later in Time Where You Are Just a Memory for the first time, a semi-fictional short film that reconstructs the intertwining between Coyolxauhqui (the moon goddess), Coatlicue (the earthly goddess of life and death) and hundreds of other siblings (the stars).

The event will be held in English and will be accompanied by the curator Jiaxing CHAO.
