Photographer Nihad Nino Pušija has examined the everyday lives of former Yugoslavia’s Roma people, now scattered across Europe, for over twenty years. In SO IST DAS BEI UNS (THAT’S HOW WE DO IT), a Galerie im Körnerpark exhibition, he presents new series focusing on creative people who move between cultures. Whether it’s a police officer from Brno who plays in a band, rappers in Essen repeatedly threatened with deportation, a veteran flamenco dancer who revives a culture centre in Seville, or a Sarajevo writer building new houses with her husband all over Europe — Pušija is not always concerned with “the refugee” or “the migrant” but instead with individuals beyond stereotypes.
Pušijas’ photos contribute to critical reflection on exclusion and inclusion and how self-image and images of others influence self-understanding.
